Thomas main research interest is segregation, the uneven distribution of students from different socio-economic or ethnic backgrounds over schools (and neighbourhoods). He is writing a PhD on the measurement (using segregation indices), determinants and effects of segregation, with special regards to Flanders. The study of school segregation is tangent to other issues in (education) economics, such as school choice and mechanism design (matching of students to schools).
